IntSpeaker Instructions

Introduction

This tiny (~24KB) command-line background program allows you to take more advantage of your PC's Internal Speaker on Windows NT/2000/XP systems. It can be attached to any program that supports running external programs with arguments on particular events, for example, some special Instant Messenger and e-mail clients support these kind of events on receiving messages or contacts coming online, or incoming e-mail, and so on. This program has no interface to keep the file size small and does not background run (except obviously when actually playing the sounds).

Usage

• Copy or move the IntSpeaker program file (and associated documentation) to where you would like it to be run from.
• Set up any program that supports running external programs, to run IntSpeaker.exe with the following arguments:
• [Frequency in Hz] [Duration in milliseconds] [Wait time after playing in milliseconds]
• You can repeat the three arguments as you see fit to play slightly more complex sounds. For example, to play middle C (C₄, see below for note frequencies), with a duration of 100 ms, with a gap of 50ms and then C₃ with a duration of 200ms, call the program with these arguments:
• 262 100 50 131 200 0
• Bear in mind you should always have a multiple of 3 arguments. If you do not use e.g. 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and so on arguments, or you run the program with no arguments at all, it will not produce a sound.
• The last figure should always be 0, unless you want a delay after the program runs.

Points to Note

• You can test out your own sound compositions by creating a shortcut to the program and adding the arguments after the target, or by calling the program from the Command Prompt.
• If you manage to get a sound stuck, for example by calling the program with a duration or delay of several minutes, you can terminate the program as normal through the Task Manager's Processes tab (press CTRL+ALT+DEL at any time to open the Task Manager).
